Happy Wednesday! Yesterday and today in math, the students (in pairs) are making a "Show Me" video on multiplication. I am going to post a few. Excellent job! When you watch the three I have posted today, you can hear how the kids are thinking, and you will probably notice a mistake or two - mistakes that didn't effect the total answer. Please feel free to comment to the students.

Good Afternoon Everyone. Hope you had a wonderful weekend. In Math we continue to struggle using the standard algorithm for multiplication. I have noticed a couple of important items that might be of help. First, the students MUST know their multiplication facts - so many of them don't and they get frustrated when they make errors. Last, several students have the basics of the algorithm, but get a head of themselves and either don't check their work, or don't really pay attention to what they are putting on paper. So today, we started using the "open array" along with the standard algorithm. The two strategies are similar and come up with the same "line" answers - which is what the kids struggle with. So, watch the video. Hope this helps. They have 3 problems for homework and I have asked that use both strategies for each problem.

Multiplication using the Standard Algorithm 4

Happy Friday!! Tonight's math homework is three problems on page 45. Students are to do problems 3, 5, and 6. In this video, I have worked through problem 5. I would like for your student to try the problem first, then watch the video. Students still struggle with the standard algorithm.

Multiplication using the Standard Alogrithm

Today we will be multiplying using the standard algorithm.  Once again, I am attaching a short video with steps on how to multiply.

In math we have been working on The Order of Operations.  The order is as follows:
1.  Complete what is in parentheses.
2.  Multiply and Divide in order from left to right.
3.  Add and Subtract in order from left to right.

The students will have homework tonight - Creating and solving expressions (using the order of operations) that describe statements and word problems.  We have gone over the problems done in class.

To help, if you get confused, I have created 1 short video using the FREE app "Show Me".  I think you can click this link to access the video (without down loading the free application) http://www.showme.com/sh/?h=lHakyhs or view the video below.  There are other videos available, but the one I posted is the one you see first.  The name is:  Expressions to describe story problems 2.

Now, I am not a professional at making theses videos - that being said I would love any comments or feedback.  Thank you.
